Bumrah Likely to Play Test vs Afghanistan, But Will Skip ODIs
Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah may play the one-off Test match against Afghanistan in June, but he will not be part of the ODI series that follows. The BCCI is carefully managing his workload.
Bumrah has been playing regularly in the ongoing IPL 2026. He has featured in all 12 matches for Mumbai Indians so far and is expected to play two more games. He even captained the side in one match against Punjab Kings.
A BCCI source said that the team management wants Jasprit Bumrah to play the Test match, but only if the medical team gives the green signal. “If the medical team approves Bumrah’s workload is under permissible limits, he might play the Test match against Afghanistan. But there is no chance of him playing the ODI series,” the source told NDTV.
If there is any concern about his fitness, he will be rested for the full series.
The selectors are not planning major changes to the Test and ODI squads despite the Afghanistan series coming right after the IPL. However, a new face could make his debut.
Lucknow Super Giants pacer Prince Yadav is expected to get his maiden call-up for the ODI series. The 24-year-old has been impressive in IPL 2026, taking 16 wickets so far – the most for his team. That is why he was not picked for the India A squad for the tri-series in Sri Lanka.
Shubman Gill, who is captaining Gujarat Titans in the IPL playoffs, is set to lead India in both the Test and ODI series against Afghanistan.
KL Rahul will be included in the ODI squad as the first-choice wicketkeeper. Ishan Kishan is likely to be his backup, replacing Rishabh Pant, who has been struggling for form.
