BBL Makes History: Chennai to Host Renegades vs Scorchers in 2026 Opener
Cricket history will be written in Chennai this December. The Big Bash League is coming to India for the very first time.
The Melbourne Renegades will host the defending champions Perth Scorchers at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on December 12. The match will be the opening game of the BBL’s 16th season. It will start at 2:40 PM IST, following the fourth day’s play of the Australia-New Zealand Test in Perth.
The fixture was jointly unveiled by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a visit to the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Both governments are backing the move to strengthen Australia-India ties through cricket.
Cricket Australia’s General Manager Alistair Dobson said the decision reflects the league’s growing popularity in India. “Our sport has such an authentic connection in India,” he said. “This game is also part of a much bigger initiative across both our governments.”
He also predicted big numbers. “We expect the match will be the most-watched game in Australian domestic league history for any sport,” Dobson added.
Why Chennai?
The Chepauk stadium was chosen with support from the BCCI. A joint delegation visited Chennai in May to check the facilities. The ground hosted India’s opening match of the 2023 ODI World Cup and will also host a Border-Gavaskar Test next year.
All eight BBL teams wanted to be part of this historic match. The Renegades were chosen because they had more flexibility in their schedule. This season, they are also moving their home games from Marvel Stadium to the MCG after 15 years. The MCG will host three of their matches this season.
Renegades general manager Max Abbott said the move is exciting. He called Marvel Stadium “a huge part of the Renegades’ DNA” but added, “We’re excited by the opportunity to create more occasions like that for fans.”
This one game in Chennai could open the door for more BBL matches in India. Cricket fans in the country will be watching closely.
