Ravindra Sidelined for India T20Is After Freak Promotional Shoot Injury

Auckland: Rachin Ravindra’s summer has been disrupted before it could properly begin. The New Zealand batter has been ruled out of the upcoming five-match T20I series against India after sustaining a shoulder injury during a promotional shoot last week, an untimely setback that leaves him racing to be fit for the ODI leg.

Ravindra is expected to require around six weeks of recovery. New Zealand’s medical staff are targeting his return for the ODIs, which begin on November 4. The T20I series gets underway on October 22 in Christchurch, leaving the hosts to plan without a player head coach Rob Walter described as central to their plans.

“We’re gutted for Rachin,” Walter said. “He’s going to play a big role for us this summer so it’s important that he doesn’t rush his rehab, but we’re optimistic he’ll be back for the ODIs.”

The nature of the injury, sustained away from the field of play, adds a layer of frustration to a setback that could not have been anticipated. For a player expected to shoulder significant responsibility across formats, the timing could hardly be worse, with India’s visit marking the start of a congested stretch of international cricket.

Jacobs Earns Opportunity

Bevon Jacobs has been drafted into the squad as a middle-order option. The 26-year-old has played 11 T20Is and made an unbeaten 62 in his most recent outing against Bangladesh, a knock that appears to have secured his place in the selectors’ thinking.

The squad also marks the return of Adam Milne, who is in line to play his first T20Is in more than a year. His inclusion forms part of an unusually large pace contingent, with Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Jacob Duffy, Zak Foulkes and Nathan Smith also named.

Ben Sears was not considered as he continues his recovery from an ankle injury.

Managing a Heavy Workload

The composition of the squad reflects a deliberate strategy. New Zealand face four Tests in Australia following India’s visit, before returning home to play Sri Lanka early next year. Walter made clear that workload management would shape selection throughout the series.

“Our priority is winning games and putting the best team on the park, but we also have to keep in mind the volume of cricket in the coming months,” he said. “We’re very fortunate with the depth that we’ve got to call upon, so we’ll look to use all 16 squad members throughout the series as we manage workloads.”

That approach explains the decision to carry seven frontline seamers. It offers Walter the flexibility to rotate his attack without compromising competitiveness, a luxury made possible by the depth available to him.

Familiar Pairing at the Top

Finn Allen and Tim Seifert will be reunited at the top of the order for the first time since the T20 World Cup. Both hold casual contracts with New Zealand Cricket and will play in the Big Bash League later in the year. Their partnership at the top represents a deliberate attempt to recapture a formula that has served New Zealand well in the shortest format. The casualty of their reunion is Tim Robinson, who misses out on selection.

Walter’s enthusiasm for the contest was evident. “It’s going to be awesome to welcome India to our shores and get summer underway,” he said. “India is a quality team and a challenging opposition, so to take them on in our own conditions in front of Kiwi fans is really exciting. We hear most of the games are going to be sold-out and it should make for some incredible occasions.

“We’ve got a near full-strength squad that covers all bases and I’m excited to see how we compete against the current T20 world champions.”

The five T20Is against India are followed by five ODIs and two Tests. For Ravindra, the immediate focus is rehabilitation. For New Zealand, the task is to ensure his absence does not derail the start of a season that promises to test their resources to the limit.
