Pakistan’s Mohammad Nawaz Banned for Doping Violation After T20 World Cup
Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Nawaz has been banned for a doping violation during the T20 World Cup earlier this year. He tested positive for a banned substance after the match against Netherlands on February 7 in Colombo.
The ICC said Nawaz tested positive for Carboxy-THC, which is classified as a “Substance of Abuse” under its Anti-Doping Code.
The 32-year-old admitted the violation. He also made it clear that the substance was consumed outside of competition and was not related to improving his performance on the field.
His original ban was set at three months. But it was reduced to one month after he agreed to complete an ICC-approved treatment programme. Since he had already served over two months of provisional suspension (starting May 1), the ban is now over.
Under the ICC rules, Nawaz’s individual records from the Netherlands match and any games after that until May 1 have been disqualified.
Nawaz is free to play again, provided he completes the treatment programme. No further suspension will be required.
For now, the matter is closed. But the incident is a reminder of how strictly the ICC enforces its anti-doping rules.
