Rohit Sharma’s Parents Arrive in London as Retirement Speculation Grows
The signs are becoming harder to ignore. Rohit Sharma’s parents have arrived in London. And the timing is telling.
Gurunath Sharma and Purnima Sharma are expected to be at Lord’s on July 19 for the third ODI between India and England. According to sources, the veteran opener made arrangements for them to be there after being informed about the selectors’ plans.
Rohit has been told that the selectors are not looking at him for the 2027 ODI World Cup. The India vs England series is likely his last. There was some talk that the Afghanistan ODIs would be his final series. But a half-century in that series pushed the decision back. Now, it seems the time has come.
Rohit has struggled in England. He scored 11 in the first ODI and 26 off 47 balls in the second. The fluent strokeplay we are used to seeing was missing. England’s bowlers kept him quiet, and he looked out of rhythm. It has not been the farewell he would have wanted.
The selectors, along with head coach Gautam Gambhir, are looking ahead. Yashasvi Jaiswal is among the young players being groomed for the future. India are building for the 2027 World Cup, and Rohit is not part of that plan.
If this is the end, Rohit leaves behind a massive legacy. In 286 ODIs, he has 11,731 runs at an average of 48.67. He has 32 hundreds and 58 fifties. He also holds the record for the highest individual score in ODI history 264.
As captain, he took India to the 2023 World Cup final and led them to the 2024 T20 World Cup title. He has already retired from T20Is and Tests. Now, it looks like ODI cricket is next.
The crowd at Lord’s will be watching closely. And so will his parents.
