Tamim Iqbal Elected as New President of Bangladesh Cricket Board
Big news from Bangladesh cricket! Former national captain Tamim Iqbal has been elected as the new president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). The election took place on Sunday in Dhaka, and Tamim won without any contest.
This means Tamim will now lead Bangladesh cricket for the next four years. He is the 21st president of the BCB.
Tamim was already working as the head of an ad-hoc committee for the last two months. That happened after the government dissolved the old board in April. The previous board, led by Aminul Islam, was removed following a probe that found corruption charges against them.
Now, with the elections done, Tamim officially takes over. He got 73 votes out of 75 from Dhaka-based clubs. That’s a huge win. His fellow board members also chose Fahim Sinha as the new vice-president.
After becoming president, Tamim spoke openly about his plans. He kept things real and honest.
“There are a lot of things, loopholes,” he said about the current system. He wants to fix the constitution if everyone agrees. But he also admitted he doesn’t know many of the board members yet. “I may not know more than half of them. I met them for the first time,” he said.
Tamim promised to be transparent. He said, “I do not want any of my board members to do anything that makes us controversial.” He also accepted that mistakes will happen. “We are humans, we are bound to make mistakes. But how quickly we can fix those mistakes is what I look forward to.”
He asked for some time to settle in and promised to share his plans step by step.
The election was a full-day event at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium. It used both physical votes and e-ballots. The new board has 25 members in total.
Some big names won seats. Sayeed Ibrahim Ahmed and Israfil Khasru got 72 votes each. Former national captain Minhajul Abedin Nannu was already elected unopposed before Sunday’s vote.
Two officials from the National Sports Council also joined the board as nominated members.
This is a new chapter for Bangladesh cricket. All eyes are now on Tamim Iqbal and how he will lead the sport in his country.
