Lanka Premier League Introduces Impact Subs and Under-23 Mandate for 2026 Season
The Lanka Premier League (LPL) has embraced two significant rule changes ahead of its 2026 edition, introducing impact substitutes alongside a mandatory requirement for each team to field an Under-23 player in their playing XI at all times. Both regulations significantly influenced squad-building strategies during the draft held in Colombo on Monday.
Franchises had to carefully balance their rosters, deciding which roles to assign to young, largely unproven talents while maintaining overall team strength. The task was complicated further by a shortage of available Under-23 players, as many of Sri Lanka’s Under-19 prospects are scheduled to tour India in July and will miss the tournament.
The injury front also delivered concerning news, with Pathum Nissanka and Matheesha Pathirana both nursing injuries. Despite being named in Sri Lanka’s touring party for the West Indies, Nissanka’s workload is being managed, and he is expected to undergo surgery to be fit for India’s upcoming tour of Sri Lanka.
Off the field, four of the five franchises unveiled new ownership and coaching staff, accompanied by fresh team identities. Only Dambulla Sixers retained their name and structure, though they endured a turbulent 2024 season with two ownership changes before the tournament began. Jaffna is now SC Jaffna Kings, Galle is Galle Gallants, Kandy is Kandy Royals, and Colombo is Colombo Kaps.
The draft concluded in under four hours, with each team required to assemble squads of at least 18 players, with an option for two additional signings. Players were divided into Platinum ($50,000), Gold ($30,000), and Classic ($20,000) categories, with separate classifications for local and foreign players. Additional categories included Associate players ($15,000) and Emerging Under-23 players ($10,000).
Notable pre-signings included recently retired Indian all-rounder Vijay Shankar, IPL breakout star Eshan Malinga, Pakistan opener Sahibzada Farhan, and experienced duo Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal. Avishka Fernando and Charith Asalanka were first-round picks despite neither finding a place in Sri Lanka’s current T20 squad, while Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Mohammad Nawaz headlined the overseas selections.
The tournament is set to feature five franchises competing under the new rules, with squads now finalized for the upcoming season.
