Tim David Suspended for IPL 2027 Opener After Ice Bag Incident in Final

Tim David

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) power-hitter Tim David has been suspended for the first match of IPL 2027 following a breach of conduct during the IPL 2026 final against Gujarat Titans (GT) in Ahmedabad.

The incident occurred in the tenth over of GT’s innings, when Jordan Cox‘s catch off Washington Sundar was ruled out. An agitated David picked up an ice bag and threw it aggressively towards umpire Nitin Menon, resulting in a Level 1 offence under Article 2.9 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which pertains to “throwing a ball or any other item of cricket equipment at or near a player, team official, umpire, match referee or any other third person in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner.”

This was David’s third Level 1 offence of the season. He was fined 50% of his match fee and handed two demerit points, taking his total over the last 36 months to five, triggering an automatic one-match ban. The suspension applies to RCB’s first game of IPL 2027 or whichever team he represents next season.

David had previously committed a Level 1 offence against Mumbai Indians in match 20 (one demerit point) and another in the reverse fixture against the same opponents in match 54 (two demerit points). He admitted to the latest offence and accepted the sanction imposed by match referee Javagal Srinath.

Despite the controversy, Tim David played a key role in RCB’s successful title defence, scoring 305 runs at an average of 33.88 and a strike rate of 188.27.
