Father: Kanhai Motie, Mother: Tarmattie Harrilall
Gudakesh Motie is a tall left-arm spinner who has become West Indies’ primary spin option across all formats, despite a relatively short international career. The 31-year-old from Georgetown, Guyana, first gained attention during the 2014 Under-19 World Cup but truly announced himself in first-class cricket with a ten-wicket haul in only his second match for Guyana against Leeward Islands. He has since topped that performance with a remarkable 13 for 99 against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo in February 2023, which remains the best match figures by a West Indies spinner in Test cricket, surpassing Sonny Ramadhin’s 71-year-old record of 11 for 152. Motie made his T20I debut against Pakistan in late 2021, followed by his Test and ODI debuts against Bangladesh in mid-2022. His tall six-foot frame allows him to extract bounce and turn from any surface, making him a handful for batters across the globe. A product of Guyana’s rich cricketing heritage of Indian descent, Motie has also featured in various franchise leagues, including for Guyana Amazon Warriors, Paarl Royals, and Lahore Qalandars.
