Bengaluru Stampede Tragedy: Arrests and Suspensions Follow Deadly IPL Celebration

Bengaluru Stampede Tragedy

In a swift response to the tragic stampede that claimed 11 lives during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) IPL victory celebrations on June 2, 2025, outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru Police have arrested key officials involved in the event’s organization. The arrests include Nikhil Sosale, RCB’s Head of Marketing and Revenue, apprehended at Kempegowda International Airport, alongside Kiran Kumar, Senior Event Manager, and Sunil Mathew, Vice President of Business Affairs, both from DNA Entertainment Network.

The arrests were ordered by Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who has taken decisive action following the incident. On June 5, 2025, the Chief Minister announced the formation of a one-man judicial commission, headed by retired Karnataka High Court judge Justice Michael D’Cunha, to investigate the tragedy. The commission has been tasked with submitting a detailed report within 30 days. Additionally, the investigation has been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), with a First Information Report (FIR) already filed.

In a significant move, the Karnataka cabinet also ordered the immediate suspension of several senior police officials, including Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda, Additional Commissioner (West) Vikash Kumar Vikash, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Shekhar H Tekkannavar, and other officials from Cubbon Park Police Station. The suspensions reflect the government’s intent to hold accountable those responsible for the lapses that led to the stampede.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah stated, “The cabinet has entrusted the inquiry to a judicial commission to ensure a thorough investigation. We have also instructed the immediate arrest of representatives from RCB, DNA Entertainment, and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA). The suspended police officials include the Police Inspector of Cubbon Park, the Assistant Commissioner of Police, and the Commissioner of Bengaluru City.”

The stampede, which occurred during the chaotic IPL victory celebrations, has raised serious questions about event management and crowd control measures at the stadium. Authorities are now focusing on ensuring such incidents are not repeated, with the judicial probe expected to shed light on the causes and accountability. Updates will follow as the investigation progresses.
