Venkatesh Iyer’s Emotional Plea to Rejoin KKR After Shock Release
In the often cutthroat world of IPL auctions and trades, a story of genuine loyalty has emerged. Venkatesh Iyer, one of the big-ticket players released by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), has made it clear that his heart remains with the franchise that launched him to stardom, expressing a heartfelt desire for a dramatic reunion.
This sentiment came to light after Iyer was asked which other team he would like to play for. In a move that endeared him to the KKR faithful, the all-rounder did not name a rival like RCB or CSK, but reaffirmed his allegiance to the Knight Riders. The player’s message was clear: “his heart is purple.” He said during an interview, “Yeah I have been in conversation ah with ah KKR obviously ah to be honest it does not come across as a surprise that I have been released. But yeah I I am still in touch with Abhishek Nair ah who happens to be my coach as well and ah you know we are all looking forward to the auction and let’s see what happens.”

Further underscoring his commitment, Iyer suggested that if KKR can buy him back at around ₹10 crore in the upcoming auction, he would seamlessly lock down the crucial number 3 batting position for the team.
This public display of loyalty comes in the wake of Iyer’s release as part of a major squad overhaul by the three-time champions. Iyer, for whom KKR splurged a massive ₹23.75 crore at the last mega auction, headlines a list of high-profile departures that includes the South African duo of Anrich Nortje and Quinton de Kock, as well as Moeen Ali, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, and Spencer Johnson.
Iyer’s journey with KKR has been a rollercoaster. He burst onto the scene with a spectacular debut season in 2021, which catapulted him into the Indian national team. After a quiet 2022, he was again a star in 2023, scoring 404 runs. However, a lean 2025 season, where he managed only 142 runs, ultimately led to his release as KKR looks to rebuild after a disappointing title defence.
His emotional connection to the franchise adds a compelling human element to the business of the IPL auction. As KKR enters the market with a hefty purse, the ball is now in their court to decide whether to reciprocate that loyalty and bring their former star back into the purple and gold fold.
