About Chennai Super Kings

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is the steadiest team in the Indian Premier League (IPL), clinching five titles with MS Dhoni as their captain. They’ve only ended up below fourth place three times. The team is owned by India Cements, run by N Srinivasan, who once led the BCCI and ICC. CSK was purchased for Rs 360 crore (about US$91 million) back in 2008.

CSK has reached the playoffs in 12 of their 15 IPL seasons. Dhoni, who fetched the highest price (Rs 9.5 crore, roughly US$1.5 million) at the first IPL auction, has been the team’s backbone. His sharp thinking, combined with coach Stephen Fleming’s smart planning, has fueled CSK’s victories over the years.

They lost the 2008 final on the very last ball and fell short in the 2009 semi-final. But then, CSK grabbed championships in 2010 and 2011. They hit a rough patch in the playoffs for the next four years and faced a two-year ban due to a betting controversy. In 2018, they roared back, winning their third title with a squad packed with players over 30.

In 2019, CSK had a nail-biting final against Mumbai Indians, losing by just one run. In 2020, they struggled in the UAE and ended near the bottom of the standings. They turned things around in 2021, finishing second in the league and beating Kolkata Knight Riders for their fourth title. In 2022, they had a tough season, just escaping last place, but made a strong comeback in 2023 to win their fifth title.
