Afghanistan Withdraws from Pakistan Tri-Series Following Cross-Border Attack

In a significant development, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has pulled its national team out of the upcoming T20I tri-series in Pakistan, following a tragic cross-border incident that resulted in several casualties, including the deaths of three local Afghan cricketers.

The multi-nation tournament, which was scheduled to be held between November 17 and 29 in Rawalpindi and Lahore, would have featured Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka.

The decision was announced via a post on X (formerly Twitter) by the ACB, which stated that the attack occurred in the Urgun district. The three cricketers were reportedly returning home after participating in a friendly match in Sharana, the capital of Paktika province.

Describing the event as a “great loss for Afghanistan’s sports community,” the ACB’s statement called it a “tragic incident.” The board further explained that its decision to withdraw was made “as a gesture of respect to the victims.”

This tri-series would have marked the second such tournament involving Afghanistan and Pakistan this year, after they clashed in a series preceding the Asia Cup in August. More notably, it was set to be the first time Afghanistan played a bilateral match against Pakistan on Pakistani soil. While Afghanistan has previously played in Pakistan during multi-nation events like the 2023 Asia Cup and this year’s Champions Trophy, they never faced the host nation in those tournaments.

The withdrawal comes at a time when diplomatic relations between the two neighbouring countries were already strained. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is yet to issue an official statement regarding this development. The future of the tri-series now hangs in the balance.
