Crimson Desert has become one of the most well-known upcoming RPGs because of its large and expansive open world, an extensive combat system, and story-driven quest. As players engage with various factions, engage on the battlefield, and meet a wide variety of characters – they can expect an outstanding RPG experience.
Players want to know how much customizing will be allowed for their hero. Many modern RPGs allow total freedom of a character to be built from the ground up. Players have access to sliders that determine the face, body, and voice of their character. The question is very simple: will there be any character customization in Crimson Desert?, or will players be limited to a fixed hero set at the time of creation?
The answer is a bit mixed. Crimson Desert does not feature a traditional character creation system. However, the game still offers a few ways to personalize your Crimson Desert character’s appearance through in-game locations and customization features.
Does Crimson Desert Have a Character Creation Tool?

No, the game does not include a traditional character creation system where players can build a Crimson Desert character from scratch.
Players will mostly play through the main storyline following Kliff, the main character. He is a preset character that has a history defined already and shows some degree of personality already established and will have a set physical appearance as well. Therefore, the player will not be able to select things like the race, facial shape, body type, or voice at the start of the game.
This is a little like The Witcher 3, where the player plays as a specific main character rather than creating their character. The benefit of this is it allows the developer to have a more directed narrative in which the future-based NPCs talk to the main character and not just some created character.
Kliff may be the only main character at launch of the game Crimson Desert, however, there are two more playable character options in the game as well. These additional characters are introduced as players progress through the main story, they each have their own character styles and personalities and provide variety to gameplay; however, they are all preset characters and aren’t able to be created by players themselves.
Originally, Black Desert Online had a character creator with more detailed options compared to most character creators created by other developers. As a result of this, some players expected to see a similar character creation system in Crimson Desert. However, Crimson Desert will build upon the fixed protagonist model to give support to the story’s social framework.
How You Can Still Customize Your Crimson Desert Character

You can still make changes to your Crimson Desert character despite not having a complete builder to use for making a new character; players can customize their character via several locations in the game world.
The majority of the way players will customize their characters will be at Greymane Camp through two important facilities that will allow them to modify both their character’s look and their character’s equipment.
Barber Shop Customization
The Barber Shop is all about customizing your character based on their face and hair. At the Barber Shop, you will have so many ways to customize the physical attributes of your character;
- Hairs styles/color
- Beard styles/colors (male characters only like Kliff and Oongka)
- Eyebrow styles/colors
- Face tattoos
- Body tattoos
According to sources, Kliff has numerous hairstyles from which he can choose, and each style has a number of colors to choose from. Loonka has many tattoo choices and has at least 13 face tattoo designs.
The above changes provide players the ability to personalize the physical characteristics of their characters. However, the Crimson Desert character faces and bodies will always be the same.
Dyehouse Customization
Players can change much more than just a character’s face inside the Dyehouse. You can change the way a piece of equipment and/or mount looks as well, including:
- Armor color and material finish
- Weapon appearance
- Horse armor and caparison colors
- War Robot armor and paint
Most pieces of equipment can be adjusted independently, providing players a way to express their individual sense of style using equipment and companion’s visual style.
This customization system gives players the opportunity to create and customize the overall visual look of their Crimson Desert character while keeping the essence of who they are at the core intact.
While Crimson Desert doesn’t allow players to create a fully customized hero, it does provide players with numerous ways in which they can customize their character’s looks and styles. Through barber shops and dyehouses, players can modify hairstyle, tattoo, armor color and more.
