All FIFA World Cup Golden Ball Winners
The FIFA World Cup Golden Ball is awarded to the best player at each World Cup finals. It does not matter if you win the tournament or not. What matters is how much influence you have across all matches. From 1930 to 2022, the award has gone to 22 different players, each leaving a strong mark on World Cup history. Only one player has managed to win it twice, which shows how rare and difficult this achievement is.
The Golden Ball highlights individual brilliance on football’s biggest stage. It recognizes players who lead, perform under pressure, and shape games from start to finish.
What Is the FIFA World Cup Golden Ball?
The Golden Ball is awarded to the best player of the World Cup tournament. The technical committee of FIFA makes a short list at the beginning. Then the representatives of the media vote and thus decide the ultimate victor. The choice is based on whole performance and not only on goals or trophies.
The award was proclaimed in 1982, but afterwards, FIFA went back to earlier tournaments and named the best player for every World Cup starting from 1930. This way, the Golden Ball now covers the entire history of the competition.
It is not a must to lift the World Cup to receive the Golden Ball. A few players have received the award while coming second, which indicates that individual brilliance can be separated from the success of the team.

The Early World Cups (1930–1954)
The first person to receive the Golden Ball was the Uruguayan captain José Nasazzi in 1930. Italy then had Giuseppe Meazza as their player, who was known for both his control and attacking impact, in 1934. The Brazilian era of the Golden Ball started in 1938 with Leônidas. Following the Second World War, 1950 was the year of Zizinho, while Hungary’s Ferenc Puskás, whose influence defined the tournament, was the one to look out for in 1954.
Brazil’s Rise and International Stars (1958–1974)
Brazil was the kingpin of this age. Didi got the trophy in 1958, followed next by Garrincha in 1962. The two, as the rest, displayed a combination of skill, creativity, and even more, leadership.
Bobby Charlton of England was the winner of the Golden Ball in 1966; his great performance was a decisive factor for his team. The following year, Pelé was awarded the title, the then-something new and worldwide good impression. Johan Cruyff was awarded the 1974 Golden Ball whose very touch had altered the game.
Decisive Plays (1978–1994)
Kempes from Argentina was the winner in 1978 who gave masterclass performances. The Italians took Paolo Rossi in 1982 who, despite his goals, is remembered for his stopping and timing.
1986 World Cup is closely associated with Diego Maradona whose impact earned him the Golden Ball. Italy got back into the picture in 1990 with Salvatore Schillaci, while Brazil’s Romário was the one to take the prize in 1994.
New Roles and Rare Winners (1998–2010)
Brazil saw new and exciting players like Ronaldo in 1998 who brought power along with superb finishing to the team. In 2002, it was Oliver Kahn who scripted a new chapter for he was the only goalkeeper who ever won the Golden Ball.
Zinedine Zidane from France received the honor in 2006 and Diego Forlán in 2010 showed that leadership and consistency are at least as important as silverware.
The Modern Era and Messi’s Record (2014–2022)
In the year 2014, Lionel Messi was awarded the Golden Ball yet Argentina ended up second. His overall impact over the whole tournament was the only thing that told the audience. The 2018 award was given to Luka Modrić, another runner-up who dominated games from midfield.
Messi again made history in 2022, taking home his second Golden Ball. He is still the only player to have done this and his long-term impact at the World Cup level is thus confirmed.
Key Trends and Records
Brazil with its seven Golden Ball winners has a big lead over the rest of the world, showing consistent excellence over several decades. It is mainly attackers and midfielders who are the winners, and Oliver Kahn is the only goalkeeper in history to ever get the award. The fact that some of the winners were from the teams finishing second proves that the Golden Ball concentrates on individual performance and not titles only.
