Ayub Steps Away as Pakistan Back Form Over Faith

Pakistan’s selectors have granted opener Saim Ayub’s request to leave the ODI squad for the remainder of the tri-series, a decision that places domestic form above reputation as the team builds towards the 2027 World Cup.

The PCB and the selection panel agreed to the move, with Ayub returning to domestic cricket to work on his form. Sahibzada Farhan, who has been in strong form, has been called up as his replacement.

The decision carries a measure of self-awareness from Saim Ayub, who recognised that his current output was not meeting the standards required at international level. Rather than persist through a lean patch in the middle of a tournament, he has chosen the domestic circuit as the place to rebuild.

For Pakistan, the timing is notable. The hosts have won three straight matches to secure a place in the final against Sri Lanka on October 27 at Gaddafi Stadium. They top the standings in the tri-series, which also features England and serves as preparation for the 2027 World Cup.

That the team could afford to release an opener mid-tournament reflects both the strength of their position and the selectors’ willingness to prioritise long-term readiness over short-term continuity. Farhan’s inclusion brings a player in form into a squad that is already performing, a combination that strengthens the competition for places.

The final against Sri Lanka now carries added significance. Pakistan will want to convert their dominant league-stage run into silverware, while Farhan will be eager to make an immediate impression in a setup that has already found its rhythm.

For Ayub, the path back to international cricket now runs through domestic performances. The selectors have shown they are willing to be patient, but the onus is on the batter to return with the form that earned him his place in the first instance.
