Kishan Ruled Out of Wellington T20I as India Monitor Adductor Strain

Ishan Kishan

Ishan Kishan will miss the third T20I against New Zealand in Wellington on Tuesday, the BCCI confirmed on Monday, after the wicketkeeper batter suffered a low grade right adductor strain in the opening match of the series.

Kishan had already sat out the second fixture, with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi taking his place in the XI. Kumar Kushagra, drafted in as his replacement for that match, will retain his spot at the Henry Stadium as India seek to extend a 2-0 series lead.

The board’s medical update offered a measure of encouragement without clearing him for action. “He is recovering well,” the BCCI stated, adding that Kishan is “yet to regain match fitness and is ruled out of the third T20I to be played on October 27, 2026 in Wellington. The BCCI Medical Team is monitoring Ishan’s progress.”

The distinction matters. A low grade strain suggests the injury is not severe, but match fitness remains the barrier. For a wicketkeeper, the demands of squatting, rising and throwing place particular stress on the adductor region, making a cautious approach inevitable.

Kushagra’s continued inclusion gives India continuity behind the stumps. The young keeper now has an extended opportunity to impress in a series India have controlled thus far, having won the opening two matches. The team management will weigh the value of that exposure against the need to manage workloads as the five-match series progresses.

India’s batting depth has absorbed Kishan’s absence without obvious disruption. Sooryavanshi’s elevation for the second T20I reflected the squad’s flexibility, and the hosts have maintained their unbeaten run despite the reshuffle.

Kishan’s recovery timeline remains open. The BCCI has not indicated whether he will be available for the remaining fixtures in the series, with the medical team continuing to assess his progress. For now, India proceed to Wellington with their winning momentum intact and a replacement keeper who has justified his selection.
