Sri Lanka Bowler Learns Tragic News Right After Asia Cup Match

Dunith Wellalage

Sri Lankan spinner Dunith Wellalage endured unimaginable heartbreak during his team’s Asia Cup 2025 clash against Afghanistan at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi. While Wellalage was focused on helping his team secure victory, his father, Suranga Wellalage, suffered a fatal heart attack mid-match. Dunith only came to know of this tragedy after the contest ended, when Sri Lanka coach Sanath Jayasuriya broke the news on the field, offering consolation and support.

The moment was captured in a poignant video, showing Jayasuriya placing an arm around the young bowler, visibly moved as he comforted Wellalage. Former Sri Lankan cricketer Russel Arnold reflected on the family’s deep ties to cricket, noting that Suranga Wellalage captained Prince of Wales College during Arnold’s own school days at St Peter’s. Despite Sri Lanka’s win, Arnold explained that celebrations would be subdued in the dressing room out of respect and solidarity, hoping the team would rally around their grieving teammate during the Super 4 stage.

Wellalage’s performance in the Group B match was challenging; he conceded 49 runs in four overs and took one wicket, including being struck for five sixes in a single over by Afghanistan veteran Mohammad Nabi. While Afghanistan fought valiantly, Sri Lanka ultimately clinched the victory.

This deeply emotional episode serves as a reminder of the human side of sport, as the cricket community joins in expressing heartfelt condolences to Dunith Wellalage and his family.
