Sourav Ganguly Re-elected CAB President, New Office-Bearers Named
Sourav Ganguly has been re-elected unopposed as the President of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) during the body’s 94th Annual General Meeting held on Monday. The smooth election process saw Ganguly taking over the reins from his brother, Snehasish Ganguly, who served as president for nearly three years. Ganguly’s unchallenged nomination came just over a week before the polls, marking his return to a role he previously held from 2015 to 2019.
Alongside Ganguly, key office bearers were named: Nitish Ranjan Dutta took charge as Vice President, Bablu Koley accepted the role of Honorary Secretary, Madan Mohan Ghosh was appointed Joint Secretary, and Sanjay Das assumed the position of Treasurer. The CAB Apex Council also welcomed a new set of members, including Koushik Mukherjee, Vivek Lohia, Shoumik Bose, Nav Ratan Jhawar, Nilanjana Bose, Surajit Lahiri, Ravi Todi, Joydeep Mukherjee, Soumendu Chatterjee, Asis Chakraborty, and Goutam Goswami.
Ganguly’s leadership experience extends beyond CAB. After his previous tenure as CAB president, he was appointed BCCI president in 2019 and held that prestigious position until 2022 before being succeeded by Roger Binny. Earlier this year, Ganguly was reappointed chair of the ICC Men’s Cricket Committee, a post he first assumed in 2021, demonstrating his continued influence in cricket administration globally.
Reflecting on his re-election, Ganguly expressed optimism and commitment: “I have worked as a President for 5 years before this as well. We will do what is best. There is an immense craze for cricket in India. There is a lot of talent. It will be our work to give direction to this talent.” His focus remains on nurturing and steering cricketing talent in Bengal and beyond.
On the field, Ganguly’s records are a testament to his stature in Indian cricket history. He played 113 Test matches, scoring 7,212 runs at an average of 42.17, including 16 centuries and 35 half-centuries. He stands as India’s seventh-highest run-scorer in Test cricket, with a highest score of 239. In the One Day International (ODI) format, Ganguly played 311 matches, amassing 11,363 runs at an average of 41.02. His 22 centuries and 72 half-centuries make him India’s third-highest ODI run scorer, with a top score of 183.
As former captain of the Indian ODI team, Ganguly led the side in 147 matches, securing 76 wins against 66 losses and five no-results—achieving a winning percentage of 51.70. Now, as he resumes his leadership role with CAB, expectations are high for his strategic guidance of Bengal cricket.
