Shelley Nitschke Signs New Three-Year Deal as Australia Women’s Head Coach

Australia women’s head coach Shelley Nitschke has signed a three-year contract extension to stay with the team until mid-2029. The news comes just before the Women’s T20 World Cup in England.

Nitschke first took over from Matthew Mott in 2022 on a four-year deal. Under her leadership, Australia won the gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and lifted the T20 World Cup trophy in 2023.

But the team has not won everything. Australia lost in the semi-finals of the last ODI World Cup and also the last T20 World Cup. Still, the team remains at the top of both the ODI and T20I rankings.

The new contract means Nitschke will be in charge of four major tournaments. These are the 2026 and 2028 T20 World Cups, the first Champions Trophy for women in 2027, and the 2028 Olympics. During this time, Australia will also play the Ashes in England in 2027 and then at home in early 2029.

“It’s a privilege to continue coaching this team and working with such an outstanding group of players and staff,” Nitschke said. “We’ve achieved a great deal together, but there’s also enormous motivation around what this group can accomplish in the years ahead.”

Before the T20 World Cup starts, Australia will play three practice games against South Africa. After that, they will have official warm-up matches against England and the West Indies.

Australia are placed in a tough group for the World Cup. Their group has South Africa, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and the Netherlands.
