R Ashwin Set for Twin T20 Challenges in ILT20 and BBL This Season

Ashwin

Ravichandran Ashwin has turned what was once a dilemma into a unique opportunity: playing in both the UAE’s International League T20 (ILT20) and Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL) in the upcoming season. Having recently retired from the IPL and international cricket, Ashwin is free to explore overseas franchise leagues—a privilege reserved for players no longer active in Indian tournaments under the BCCI.

Ashwin’s availability for both leagues comes despite the typical schedule clash. The ILT20 will run from December 2, 2025, to January 4, 2026, while the BBL begins on December 14 and finishes on January 25. According to multiple reports, Ashwin will start his overseas journey in the ILT20 and then join one of the BBL franchises for the January leg of the Australian league, limiting his appearances to the latter stages and possibly the finals if his team qualifies.

Interest from Australia is high, with both Sydney franchises (Sixers and Thunder), the Hobart Hurricanes coached by Ricky Ponting, and Tim Paine’s Adelaide Strikers all reportedly keen to sign him. Amid negotiations, Ashwin has registered for the ILT20 auction, set for October 1, expressing hope that one of the UAE teams will bid for him after direct signings closed.
This dual assignment marks a new chapter for the veteran spinner, who is expected to become the first capped male Indian cricketer in the history of the BBL. Beyond ILT20 and BBL, there are indications Ashwin may look at other global franchise leagues such as Major League Cricket (MLC) in the United States or The Hundred in the UK, although those formalities remain ahead.

Ashwin’s post-IPL career highlights not only his enduring ambition but also sets a precedent for Indian retirees embracing global T20 opportunities. Fans worldwide can anticipate his tactical cleverness and experience challenging batsmen across vastly different conditions in two of the sport’s most competitive leagues.
