New Zealand All-rounder Doug Bracewell Announces Retirement from All Cricket

Former New Zealand international Doug Bracewell has called time on his professional cricket career, bringing an 18-year journey to a close. The 35-year-old all-rounder announced his retirement from all forms of the game on Monday.

Bracewell, who made his first-class debut for Central Districts as an 18-year-old in 2008, represented New Zealand across all three formats between 2011 and 2023. He played 28 Tests, 21 ODIs, and 20 T20Is for the Black Caps.

One of the standout moments of his career came early, when he was named Player of the Match in just his third Test; a famous seven-run victory over Australia in Hobart in 2011. His all-round contributions were pivotal in securing one of New Zealand’s most memorable away wins.

A persistent rib injury, which ruled him out of the ongoing domestic season, played a significant role in his decision to retire.

In a statement released by Central Districts, Bracewell expressed his gratitude for the career he lived. “It’s been a proud part of my life, and something I aspired to as a young cricketer,” he said. “I will always be grateful for the opportunities I have had through cricket, and the chance to play for my country, as well as for Central Districts, throughout my domestic career.”

He also thanked his teammates, coaches, and support staff who accompanied him on his journey, adding, “It’s a privilege to play first-class and international cricket, and I’m grateful to have played and enjoyed the game for as long as I have.”
