MLC 2026: Why This Season Could Be Bigger Than Ever?
R Ashwin’s debut, new venues, star players and fresh storylines make MLC 2026 a must-watch tournament
Major League Cricket (MLC) is back for its fourth season, and this year’s tournament promises plenty of excitement. The competition begins on June 18 with Texas Super Kings taking on Seattle Orcas in Dallas. Coming right after IPL 2026, MLC will once again bring together some of the biggest names in world cricket along with emerging talent from the USA.
One of the biggest talking points this season is the arrival of Ravichandran Ashwin. The veteran spinner will play for San Francisco Unicorns and becomes the first former India international to feature in the league. After retiring from international cricket in December 2024 and stepping away from the IPL at the end of the 2025 season, Ashwin is now set for a new challenge in American cricket.
The Ashwin Factor
For many fans, Ashwin’s arrival is the biggest reason to follow MLC 2026. This will be his first franchise T20 tournament outside the IPL. He was supposed to play in the Big Bash League for Sydney Thunder earlier this year, but a serious knee injury forced him to miss the tournament.
His last competitive match came in the Tamil Nadu Premier League final in July 2025. Since then, fans have been waiting to see him back in action. If fully fit, Ashwin’s experience and tactical understanding could make him one of the most influential players in the competition.
New Venues, Bigger Plans
MLC 2026 will be played across three venues.
| Venue | Location | Key Details |
| Grand Prairie Stadium | Dallas | Hosts opening matches and final group-stage games |
| Oakland Coliseum | California | Hosts playoffs and final |
| Knight Riders Cricket Field | Pomona, California | New venue hosting 7 matches |
The Knight Riders Cricket Field is one of the most exciting additions this year. It serves as the home base of Los Angeles Knight Riders and is also expected to play a role during the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. ICC chief executive Sanjog Gupta even described it as “cricket’s home for LA28.”
Who Are the Teams?
The six teams competing this season are-
- Washington Freedom
- San Francisco Unicorns
- MI New York
- Los Angeles Knight Riders
- Texas Super Kings
- Seattle Orcas
Defending champions MI New York will once again be among the favorites after their remarkable title-winning campaign in 2025. Interestingly, they won the trophy despite winning just one of their first seven matches.
New Captains, New Challenges
Several teams have made important leadership decisions ahead of the season. The biggest captaincy change comes at Washington Freedom, where Steven Smith replaces Glenn Maxwell. Smith previously led the franchise to the title in 2024 and has enjoyed excellent T20 form over the last two years.
Steven Smith Since 2024
| Matches/Innings | Runs | Average | Strike Rate |
| 36 Innings | 1325 | Nearly 45 | Over 155 |
Meanwhile, Matt Short, Faf du Plessis, Nicholas Pooran and Jason Holder continue as captains of their respective teams.
Seattle Orcas have gone through a major reset after winning only three matches last season. Marcus Stoinis takes over as captain, while Adam Voges joins as head coach.
Players Who Could Steal the Show
MLC 2026 is packed with star power. Veterans like Kieron Pollard and Andre Russell may have retired from the IPL, but they remain match-winners in T20 cricket.
Pollard enters the tournament with a major milestone in sight.
T20 Record Watch
| Player | Situation |
| Kieron Pollard | 81 runs away from overtaking Chris Gayle as highest T20 run-scorer |
| Alex Hales | Also closing in on Gayle’s record |
Another player under the spotlight will be Nicholas Pooran. The MI New York captain had a difficult IPL 2026 campaign and will be eager to rediscover his best form.
Then there is Finn Allen. The explosive batter recently smashed the fastest century in T20 World Cup history, reaching three figures in just 33 balls. Having already scored hundreds in the T20 World Cup, IPL and MLC, Allen could once again be one of the biggest attractions of the tournament.
Young Players to Watch
Several young players will make their MLC debuts this season.
| Player | Team |
| Ollie Peake | San Francisco Unicorns |
| Tim Robinson | Seattle Orcas |
| AM Ghazanfar | MI New York |
| Peter Siddle | San Francisco Unicorns |
While Peter Siddle is far from young at 41, his MLC debut will still be one of the interesting stories of the season.
USA Stars Ready for the Spotlight
MLC continues to play an important role in developing cricket in the USA. Andries Gous remains the country’s biggest franchise cricket name after appearing in tournaments such as the PSL, CPL and ILT20.
Meanwhile, Washington Freedom fast bowler Saurabh Netravalkar has quietly built an impressive MLC record.

| Player | Wickets | Innings |
| Saurabh Netravalkar | 34 | 24 |
Young talents Sai Mukkamalla and Sanjay Krishnamurthi are also expected to attract attention after impressive performances during the T20 World Cup.
Why MLC 2026 Feels Different?
This season has everything a cricket fan could ask for. A legendary Indian spinner making his league debut, a new Olympic-linked venue, global T20 stars chasing records, exciting American talent and defending champions looking to repeat their success.
More importantly, MLC continues to grow every year. With bigger names, better venues and increasing global attention, the 2026 season could be the tournament’s most important edition yet.
