India Split Captaincy for West Indies Series as Gill and Iyer Take Charge

The BCCI unveiled its squads for the upcoming white-ball series against West Indies on September 16, appointing Shubman Gill to lead the ODI side and Shreyas Iyer to captain the T20I outfit. The three ODIs begin on September 27 in Thiruvananthapuram, with the five-match T20I series starting on October 6 in Lucknow.

Experience Anchors the ODI Squad

Gill’s first assignment as ODI captain carries considerable weight. The squad features Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, two stalwarts whose presence provides both star power and a measure of continuity. Ruturaj Gaikwad returns to the fold, while Auqib Nabi and Naman Dhir earn debut call-ups.

The composition reflects a dual purpose. The selectors have retained proven performers for the immediate challenge of a home series while introducing fresh faces who could feature in the longer-term planning for the 2027 World Cup. The inclusion of Rohit and Kohli, both of whom have retired from T20I cricket, indicates their continued importance in the 50-over format.

Iyer Leads a Younger T20I Group

The T20I squad, by contrast, leans more heavily on emerging talent. Iyer, who has captained India in the format previously, will have Tilak Varma and Ishan Kishan for company, along with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, the teenage opener whose recent domestic exploits have generated considerable attention.

The presence of players bound for the Asian Games shaped some of the selection decisions. The T20I series, played concurrently with that multi-sport event, required the selectors to distribute resources across two demanding assignments.
