This decision is expected to be made official before the Ireland series starting on June 26. The move is part of a long-term plan. The team management is already looking ahead to the 2028 Olympics and the next T20 World Cup. They want a fresh leader who can build a strong squad for these big events.
Why Shreyas Iyer?
The 31-year-old batter from Mumbai has been in brilliant form. He led the Punjab Kings impressively in the recent IPL 2026 season. Even though he missed out on the last few World Cups, his leadership skills and batting have caught the selectors’ eyes. Now, he is being trusted to lead the national side in the shortest format.
Along with the captaincy change, there is exciting news for a young talent. Vaibhav Suryavanshi, a teenage opening batter, has earned his first-ever call-up to the Indian team.
He has been picked for the India A tri-series in Sri Lanka, which starts on June 9. The selectors have been very impressed with his IPL performance. He scored a stunning 776 runs at an unbelievable strike rate of 237.30. That kind of hitting power is hard to ignore.
Young star Tilak Varma is likely to be named the vice-captain of this new-look T20I squad. The team management is clearly thinking about the future. They are building a young and fearless team for the challenges ahead.
This is a fresh start for Indian T20 cricket. A new captain. A new young star. And a clear goal to win gold at the Olympics and bring home another T20 World Cup.
