Ben Stokes Dropped for Oval Test After Nightclub Incident, Joe Root Takes Charge
The 34-year-old has been named interim skipper for the second Test against New Zealand at The Oval on June 17. Regular captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson have both been left out. The reason? A late-night incident at a London nightclub.
England won the first Test at Lord’s. Some players went out to celebrate. But things went too far. Stokes and Atkinson reportedly broke the team’s midnight curfew. That rule was put in place just a few months ago after other off-field issues during England’s winter tours.
To make matters worse, a rugby player who was with them allegedly threw a punch. That punch hit the ECB security officer who was there to protect Stokes and Atkinson.
The ECB is now investigating. Until that is done, both players have been “not made available for selection.”
England have made two changes. Wicketkeeper-batter Jordan Cox and fast bowler Jofra Archer come into the XI. Archer was rested for the first Test after his IPL duties.
Root has captained England before. In fact, he has led in 64 Tests more than any Englishman. He stepped down in April 2022, and Stokes took over. Now, he is back in charge for this crucial match.
Some might have expected Harry Brook to take the armband. He was vice-captain on the Ashes tour. But last year, Brook himself had a run-in with a bouncer the night before a match. Maybe the selectors wanted a cleaner, safer choice. Root fits that bill.
England lead the three-match series 1-0 after a solid 115-run win at Lord’s. They will want to seal it at The Oval. But without Stokes and Atkinson, the job just got a little harder.
Root has a chance to show he is still the leader England once trusted. For Stokes and Atkinson, this is a lesson in responsibility. And for fans? They will be watching closely to see how this story unfolds.
