BCCI President Mithun Manhas, captain Shreyas Iyer and members of the Indian squad received a good-luck charm from Ambassador ONO Keiichi, Japan’s top diplomat in India, ahead of the first T20I between the two nations. The doll, presented as a token of perseverance, was exchanged at a meeting that carried meaning beyond the cricket field.

The fixture, branded the Suzuki Cup T20I, is scheduled for September 22 in Japan. It marks the first time the two sides will meet in the format and arrives as part of a broader commemoration of 75 years of diplomatic relations between the countries.

The occasion also serves as the launchpad for the Sport 75 initiative, a programme aimed at deepening sporting exchanges between the two nations under the guidance of Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Takaichi. Both sides described the moment as the beginning of a new chapter in their friendship.

Manhas, speaking at the meeting, noted the growth of cricket in Japan and expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming Asian Games, where the sport will feature prominently. The good-luck doll, a traditional Japanese symbol, was offered as a gesture of goodwill for the journey ahead.

For India, the fixture represents a departure from the familiar rhythms of international cricket. A one-off T20I against an emerging cricketing nation in a country where the sport is still finding its footing offers a different kind of occasion. The match forms part of India’s preparations before the Asian Games, adding a competitive dimension to a tour that is as much about outreach as it is about results.

The series against Afghanistan, which India currently leads 2-0, concludes on Thursday. Attention will then shift to Japan, where a good-luck charm and a historic first meeting await.
