Bouchier Century Powers England to Record-Breaking Chase Against Ireland

Maia Bouchier delivered a masterclass in aggressive batting at Grace Road on Wednesday, her 95-ball century propelling England to their highest successful ODI run chase as they swept past Ireland’s 281 with more than 11 overs to spare.

The opening batter’s 104, studded with 11 fours, formed the centrepiece of a chase that dismantled what had appeared a competitive total. England reached 283 for 4 in just 38.1 overs, winning by six wickets and underlining the depth of their batting firepower.

Dunkley Provides Explosive Support

Bouchier found an able ally in Sophia Dunkley, with the pair adding 143 runs off 118 deliveries for the opening wicket. The assault began in earnest in the sixth over when Bouchier took to 23-year-old pacer Jane Maguire, striking four successive boundaries to set the tone. England raced to 72 for no loss inside the first 10 overs, with Dunkley reaching a 40-ball half-century in the 15th over and Bouchier following suit off 53 deliveries in the 17th.

Dunkley fell for 73 off 61 balls, caught off the bowling of Cara Murray in the 20th over. Murray struck again in the following over to remove Jodi Grewcock, but the wickets did little to slow England’s momentum. Bouchier combined with Alice Capsey for a 50-run stand before reaching her century off 91 balls in the 31st over. She fell in the 32nd, but by then the chase was all but secured.

Ireland’s Promising First Half Undone

Ireland’s innings had been built on solid foundations. Amy Hunter (62) and Gaby Lewis (69) shared a second-wicket partnership of 136 off 152 balls, their 13 fours between them providing the platform for a total that initially appeared challenging. When Ireland lost three wickets in the space of 7.1 overs from the 30th over, a sub-250 finish seemed likely, but Leah Paul and Rebecca Stokell added a vital 84 off just 71 deliveries to push the visitors to 281 for 5. Stokell remained unbeaten on 54.

The late flourish of 77 runs off the last 60 balls gave Ireland belief, but England’s response rendered that effort redundant.

After Bouchier’s dismissal, Freya Kemp accelerated the chase with a blistering 36 off 22 balls. She struck Louise Little for two fours in an over before hitting four boundaries off Arlene Kelly as England surged past 250 in the 34th over. Murray claimed her third wicket when she removed Kemp, but Capsey finished the chase with a four in the following over, remaining unbeaten on 41 off 40 deliveries.

For Ireland, Murray’s 3 for 58 was the lone bright spot with the ball. England’s victory, achieved with 71 balls to spare, marks their highest successful ODI run chase and leaves Ireland with much to ponder ahead of the remainder of the series.
