Rana and Nitish Set to Miss Sri Lanka Tests and Washington Still Doubtful

India’s selectors are in a holding pattern, awaiting fresh fitness reports from the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru before finalising the squad for the upcoming Test series in Sri Lanka. The national selection committee is expected to convene within the next 10 to 36 hours, with the availability of several key players hanging in the balance.

Washington Sundar, Harshit Rana, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Akash Deep and Anshul Kamboj are all currently at the CoE, and their fitness status will be central to the selection deliberations. While Hardik Pandya and Varun Chakravarthy are also at the facility, they are not in contention for the Sri Lanka tour, having been confined to white-ball cricket.

Rana, Reddy Almost Certainly Ruled Out

For Rana and Reddy, the news is particularly discouraging. Both are almost certainly ruled out of the Test series. Rana is nursing a hamstring injury similar to Washington’s, while Nitish Reddy, the all-format player, has been informed by the team management that he is currently being viewed only as a white-ball cricketer. He is expected to return to action only in September, when India have a string of limited-overs fixtures. His next red-ball appearance may not come until November, when India are scheduled to play two WTC Tests in New Zealand.

Washington’s Availability Uncertain

Washington Sundar presents a more complex case. The 26-year-old off-spinner, who has generally been preferred by the team management under Gautam Gambhir and Shubman Gill, is nursing a hamstring injury. There is no guarantee he will be available for the series, which is a significant concern given that the pitches in Sri Lanka are expected to assist spinners.

Washington’s value extends beyond his bowling. He has experience batting in the top order, making him a valuable asset in subcontinental conditions. One possibility being considered is a conditional selection for the second Test, which begins on August 23, but even that appears to be a long shot.

Bumrah’s Availability Looks Promising

Jasprit Bumrah is expected to join the CoE, and there is some ambiguity over his availability for the Tests, which are part of the current WTC cycle. However, the indications are positive. Bumrah missed the final ODI against England at Lord’s, but the injury to his left knee was not considered serious.

“Jasprit Bumrah had an impact injury on his left knee while fielding in the second ODI in Cardiff. He was not available for selection for the third ODI due to reactive swelling in his left knee,” the BCCI had stated about the spearhead. Given that he has not played much cricket since the IPL, the chances of his inclusion are higher than not.

Squad Retainment Expected

Most players who featured in the one-off Test against Afghanistan last month are expected to retain their places in the squad. Ravindra Jadeja, who missed that match in New Chandigarh, is also set to return to the Test fold.

The selection meeting was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but there is a possibility it may take place on Monday itself, conducted online. The final composition of the squad will depend heavily on the fitness reports from the CoE, particularly regarding Washington’s hamstring, which could yet shape the balance of the side for the spin-friendly conditions in Sri Lanka.
