IPL 2026 Auction Slated for Mid-December; Player Retention Deadline is November 15

IPL

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is zeroing in on the schedule for the next Indian Premier League (IPL) auction, a key event that will shape the teams for the 2026 season. According to media reports, the IPL 2026 auction is likely to be held around December 13-15.

While the league’s Governing Council has not officially locked in the dates, discussions with franchises are centred on this mid-December window. In a parallel development, the board is also leaning towards bringing the auction back to India, after hosting the last two editions in Dubai (2023) and Jeddah (2024).

Key Dates and Retention Rules

What appears more certain is the deadline for player retention. Franchises will have to confirm their list of retained and released players by November 15. This gives team managements a little over a month to finalise their strategies for the mini-auction.

Potential Player Movements and Team Strategies

Early indications suggest we may not see a massive churn across the league, with the exception of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR), both of whom had a disappointing 2025 season and could be in for a significant reshuffle.

According to reports, some of the prominent names who could be on the release list include Deepak Hooda, Vijay Shankar, Rahul Tripathi, and Sam Curran. There is also speculation about CSK releasing Devon Conway. The five-time champions already have INR 9.75 crore added to their purse following the IPL retirement of R Ashwin.

For the Rajasthan Royals, all eyes are on skipper Sanju Samson. The franchise is expected to release him unless they can orchestrate a late trade. There had been talk of the Royals letting go of their Sri Lankan spin duo, Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana, but the potential return of Kumar Sangakkara as head coach could influence that decision.

Other players who might be looking for new franchises include T Natarajan, Mitchell Starc, Akash Deep, Mayank Yadav, and David Miller. The future of Venkatesh Iyer, whom Kolkata Knight Riders bought for a massive INR 23.75 crore, also remains unconfirmed.

The Hot Property of IPL 2026 Auction

Amidst the speculation, one name is already generating significant buzz among team officials: Cameron Green. The Australian all-rounder, who missed the previous auction due to injury, has reportedly attracted early interest from several franchises and is poised to be one of the most hotly pursued players when the bidding begins this December.
