WPL 2026 expected to start from January 7, Two cities may host the entire season
There is good news for women’s cricket lovers. Recently, India won the World Cup, and now the expected date for the start of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) has also been announced. The fourth edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) is reportedly set to begin on January 7 with the final on February 3.
According to media reports, the tournament will be held in two phases. The first phase will be held at the Indian women’s team’s favourite DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai and the second at the Kottambi Stadium in Vadodara.
The report states that the dates are not yet finalised, nor have the franchises been informed, but it is almost certainly due to some scheduling reasons. Firstly, the Men’s T20 World Cup will begin in early February, lasting for a month across various venues in India and Sri Lanka.
It is being said that most cricket boards have accepted January as a long-term window for the WPL, to ensure that the tournament remains distinct from other global leagues (especially the Women’s Big Bash League) and to avoid conflict with the ICC Future Tours Programme.
In all likelihood, the five franchises may be officially informed about the venues during the WPL auction to be held in New Delhi on November 27.
Recently, the Indian women’s team won the ICC World Cup, the viewership of the final match of which was equal to that of the Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, which clearly shows that this will definitely have an impact on Indian women’s cricket and, most importantly, on WPL. It was definitely likely to see a lot of growth in the pipeline this year for WPL as well.
