Axar Patel has evolved into one of India’s most reliable bowling allrounders, combining tight left-arm spin with valuable lower-order runs.
He featured in just one game in his debut first-class season but impressed in 2013 with the ACC Emerging Teams Cup, claiming seven wickets and a crucial four-for in the semi-final. That Ranji season, he contributed with both bat and ball, scoring 369 runs at 46.12 and taking 29 wickets at 23.58.
Axar’s breakthrough came in the 2014 IPL for Kings XI Punjab, where he bagged 16 wickets at 6.22 economy, earning him an India ODI debut vs Bangladesh. A T20I debut followed in 2015, though he often filled in only when Ravindra Jadeja was unavailable.
His big moment arrived during the 2021 England Test series, when Jadeja’s injury opened the door. On debut in Chennai, he took five wickets, before adding an 11-wicket haul in the third Test, finishing the series with 27 wickets.
Axar has since proved his batting worth too, smashing a 27-ball ODI fifty vs West Indies in 2022. He then played a pivotal role in India’s 2024 T20 World Cup win, contributing in both departments, and was rewarded by being named India’s T20I vice-captain in January 2025.
