MCA Immortalizes Rohit Sharma with Wankhede Stand Dedication
The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has etched Rohit Sharma’s name into the heart of Wankhede Stadium, naming a stand after the Indian cricket icon. The decision, finalized during the MCA’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Tuesday, places the Rohit Sharma Stand at Divecha Pavilion Level 3, celebrating his monumental contributions to the sport.
Honoring Cricket Legends
- The Divecha Pavilion (Level 3) will be renamed as the Rohit Sharma Stand, recognizing his monumental contributions to Mumbai and Indian cricket.
- The Grand Stand (Level 3) will bear the name of former MCA president and BCCI chief Sharad Pawar, acknowledging his administrative legacy.
- Level 4 of the Grand Stand will be dedicated to late former India captain Ajit Wadekar, commemorating his pioneering leadership.
Additionally, the MCA will pay tribute to its late president Amol Kale by renaming the match-day office at the MCA Pavilion as the MCA Office Lounge.
The AGM also paid tribute to other legends. The Grand Stand Level 4 will now bear the name of former India captain Ajit Wadekar, while Level 3 will honor former MCA president Sharad Pawar. In a touching gesture, the MCA Pavilion’s match-day office has been rechristened the MCA Office Lounge, commemorating former MCA president Amol Kale, who passed away during his tenure.
“These stands and this lounge will forever echo the legacy of those who built Mumbai’s cricketing spirit — brick by brick, run by run,” said MCA president Ajinkya Naik, reflecting the sentiment of the packed meeting. The resolutions, proposed by Milind Narvekar and seconded by Jitendra Awhad, underscore MCA’s commitment to honoring its stalwarts.
Beyond the tributes, the MCA announced a bold financial move, boosting the corpus for affiliated clubs to Rs. 75 crores, with plans to scale it to Rs. 100 crores in the coming years. This investment aims to fortify grassroots cricket and nurture the next generation of talent across Mumbai.
As the Wankhede’s stands take on these iconic names, fans can almost hear the roar of the crowd, forever tied to the heroes who made Mumbai cricket legendary.
