ICC To Discuss Mobile Gaming Rights and U-19 World Cup Format in Dubai

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is preparing for its key meetings in Dubai from November 4 to 7, where some major topics could shape the future of world cricket. Two of the main issues on the table are mobile gaming rights and the format of the Under-19 World Cup.

The ICC is planning to launch its own mobile gaming platform, but not everyone agrees on how it should be done. The main concern is about player imaging rights, which the ICC says belong to individual cricket boards.

However, this issue becomes tricky when it comes to retired players, whose rights are not clearly defined.

The World Cricketers’ Association (WCA) has raised objections after being left out of the project. These disagreements are expected to be a major discussion point during the meetings.

Another big topic is the format of the Men’s Under-19 World Cup. Full-member nations want to continue with the 50-over format, while associate members are pushing for a T20 version.

The associate countries argue that the shorter format suits the modern cricket calendar and is more appealing to young audiences. In contrast, the full members believe the 50-over format better prepares players for international cricket.

The Future of ICC

New ICC CEO Sanjog Gupta will present his long-term vision for the organization during the meetings. His plan reportedly includes expanding cricket’s presence in multi-sport events beyond the Olympics — such as the Pan American Games and South American Games.

The Chief Executives’ Committee (CEC) will also review how the stop-clock rule is working in Test cricket and discuss updates to the Future Tours Programme (FTP), which defines the international calendar for all cricketing nations.

Another matter that could reach the ICC’s table is the Asia Cup trophy dispute. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has said it will raise the issue if the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) fails to officially hand over the trophy to India after their win.

Reports suggest that ACC President Mohsin Naqvi has been unresponsive, and his attendance at the Dubai meetings remains uncertain. If unresolved, the matter might be escalated at the ICC board level.
