IPL 2026 Schedule Finalised: Tournament to Run From March 26 to May 31
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has formally informed the franchises that the 19th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will be held from March 26 to May 31, 2026. The schedule was confirmed during a pre-auction briefing in Abu Dhabi by IPL CEO Hemang Amin.
While the dates are now set, a significant question mark remains over the venue for the tournament opener. Traditionally, the opening match is hosted in the city of the defending champions, which would be Bengaluru following Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) 2025 title win. However, the availability of the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium is still under a cloud due to security and safety concerns.
The uncertainty stems from the tragic stampede on June 4, 2025, which occurred during RCB’s title celebrations at the stadium, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries. Since the incident, the Karnataka state government has been reluctant to grant permission for events at the venue. This had earlier forced the BCCI to relocate Women’s World Cup matches away from Bengaluru.
While the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) has reportedly received a conditional clearance from the state government, it is subject to meeting strict safety and security stipulations. When asked about the possibility of the league starting at Chinnaswamy, a senior BCCI official expressed cautious optimism, citing recent positive statements from the state’s Deputy Chief Minister, DK Shivakumar.
The official confirmation of the window now allows franchises to finalise their auction strategies with a clear timeline in mind, even as the location for the marquee opening night remains to be decided.
