IPL 2025: New Rule Changes Every Fan Should Know
The 18th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is just around the corner, and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced some fascinating rule changes to spice up the competition. As the 10 franchises prepare to battle it out for the coveted IPL trophy, these new regulations promise to add a fresh twist to the game. Let’s take a closer look at what’s in store for IPL 2025.
1. Saliva Ban Lifted: A Win for Bowlers
In a significant move, the BCCI has decided to lift the saliva ban that was imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Bowlers can now use saliva to shine the ball, a practice that was previously banned for health reasons. This decision came after a majority of IPL captains supported the change during a meeting in Mumbai. While the International Cricket Council (ICC) made the saliva ban permanent in 2022, the IPL’s decision could influence other leagues to reconsider their stance.
2. Conditional Second New Ball in Evening Matches
To tackle the challenges posed by dew in evening matches, the BCCI has introduced a conditional rule. A second new ball will be made available from the 11th over of the second innings, but only if the umpires determine that dew is significantly affecting play. This rule aims to balance the contest between bat and ball in high-scoring games. However, it won’t apply to afternoon matches, where dew is less of a factor.
3. DRS Expanded to Include Wides
In a first for the IPL, the Decision Review System (DRS) will now cover height wides and off-side wides. This expansion ensures fairer decision-making and reduces controversies around wide deliveries. However, leg-side wides will still be judged by the on-field umpires, keeping some element of human judgment intact.
Impact Player Rule Stays
Despite criticism from some quarters, the BCCI has decided to retain the Impact Player rule, which allows teams to field 12 players instead of the traditional 11. Critics argue that this rule limits the role of all-rounders, but the BCCI believes it adds strategic depth to the game. Fans can expect teams to continue leveraging this rule to their advantage in IPL 2025.
What This Means for IPL 2025?
These rule changes are set to make IPL 2025 more dynamic and unpredictable. From giving bowlers an edge with the return of saliva to ensuring fairer decisions with expanded DRS, the BCCI is clearly focused on enhancing the quality of the game. As the tournament kicks off, all eyes will be on how teams adapt to these new regulations and whether they lead to more thrilling contests.
