You need them to progress the project and earn Merits. The item is not rare, but it only spawns in the right type of locations. If you search random buildings, you will waste time.

How to Find Water Filters in ARC Raiders
Water Filters are classified as Industrial loot. Meaning, you should be prioritizing locations with machinery, containers, storage, and utility rooms. There are no fixed spawn points, so instead of searching for one obvious pickup you have to loot containers and shelves.
Water Filters are mostly found hiding inside metal boxes, red lockboxes, and cabinets. Industrial bins and shelves are also good, but loot containers are always the best choice.
Loot quality increases during Cold Snap, Night Raids, and all other special conditions and so does the spawn rate of Water Filters. However, these conditions also increase the danger level.
Best Maps and Locations for Water Filters
This is the most reliable map for Water Filters. Water Treatment Control is the best location as you have rooms and containers designed for Industrial loot. Power Generation Complex is also good, especially the lower and basement areas. The Hydroponic Dome Complex domes also work well if you fully loot the domes instead of rushing through.
Prestige on Vehicle Maintenance and Container Storage. There are a lot of breach-able metal containers in these areas. Rocket Assembly can also spawn Water Filters, in particular, the upper rooms of the breach are on the water filters.
On Stella Montis, the Loading Bay is your best choice. Both levels can spawn Water Filters, but this area is risky because ARC enemies often patrol it. Clear carefully before looting. The lower industrial sections of the map can also drop Water Filters if you check lockers and bins.
On The Blue Gate, the Warehouse Complex is the main place to search. It is quieter than other maps but still follows industrial loot rules. Adorned Wreckage can also work, but drops are less consistent.
On Buried City, Water Filters are less common because the map lacks clear industrial zones. If you search here, focus on warehouses on the western and northwestern edges. Do not expect fast results on this map.
Best Farming Tips
Use a free loadout or light gear so you do not lose value if you die. Put Water Filters in your Safe Pocket as soon as you find them. Fully clear one industrial zone instead of bouncing between locations. Containers matter more than open-world loot. Extract as soon as you have what you need instead of getting greedy.
