Top Australian Stars May Skip BBL for Bigger Pay in South Africa

Some of Australia’s biggest cricket names might stay away from the Big Bash League in January 2028. Players like Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc want higher pay. If local salaries do not go up to about $1 million each, they may ask to skip the BBL.

The main reason is the pay gap. Foreign players already earn about $100,000 more than top Australian players. This is true even though Australian stars bring in the crowds and are the face of the league.

Cricket Australia knows this is a problem. They fear losing their best players to richer leagues like the SA20 in South Africa. To fix this, they are thinking about changes. One idea is to remove the overseas player draft. Talks about selling parts of teams are also stuck, which adds more pressure.

Fans love watching their local heroes play in the BBL. If these stars leave, it could hurt the league’s popularity. Cricket Australia now has to find a way to keep everyone happy.
