Suryakumar Yadav Removed as India’s T20I Captain Despite World Cup Triumph, Reports Suggest
In a stunning development just days after India’s T20 World Cup victory on home soil, reports have emerged that Suryakumar Yadav has been removed as the nation’s T20I captain, with the team management and selectors opting for a leadership change ahead of the 2028 World Cup cycle.
According to sources, the decision backed by head coach Gautam Gambhir comes primarily due to Suryakumar’s prolonged batting slump, most notably during IPL 2026, where he managed just 270 runs at an average of 20.76. Under his captaincy, his personal batting average also dropped to 28.65.
The timing of the reported move has surprised many, given Suryakumar’s exceptional leadership record. As captain, he led India to 42 wins in 50 T20Is, including the 2026 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Asia Cup. His aggressive, fearless brand of cricket had become the hallmark of India’s white-ball revolution post-2024.
Shreyas Iyer has emerged as the frontrunner to take over the captaincy, with Tilak Varma and Ishan Kishan also reportedly in contention. The BCCI is said to be looking at a long-term reset with an eye on the 2028 T20 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
An official announcement is awaited from the Board. If confirmed, Suryakumar’s removal will rank among the most surprising leadership decisions in recent Indian cricket history.
