The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) named the 31-year-old as the new T20I captain on June 6. He will lead the team in the upcoming series against Ireland and England, followed by the 2026 Asian Games.

Shreyas replaces Suryakumar Yadav, who has been going through a tough patch with the bat. The selectors felt it was time for a fresh face to lead the side.

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar spoke highly of Shreyas. He pointed to his smart captaincy in the IPL while leading Punjab Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders. The selectors have also named Tilak Varma as vice-captain. Young talent, including 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, has also made it to the squad.

Shreyas has worked hard to get back. He faced back injuries that kept him out for a while. But a strong performance in IPL 2026 reminded everyone what he brings to the table.

Now, with the captain’s armband on his shoulder, a new chapter begins.

The sweetest moment of the announcement came when Shreyas shared the news at home. His father broke into a joyful dance that was both pure and heartwarming. The video has gone viral, with fans pouring in their love and best wishes.

Of course, not everyone agrees with the change. Some feel Suryakumar deserved more time. But for Iyer and his family, this is a moment to treasure.

The new captain will now prepare to lead a young and exciting Indian side. And if his father’s reaction is anything to go by, the Iyer household couldn’t be prouder.
