R. Ashwin ruled out of the BBL 15 due to a knee injury
Legendary Indian spinner R Ashwin missed out on becoming the first Indian male capped cricketer to play in Australia’s Big Bash League after being ruled out of the tournament due to a knee injury. Ashwin suffered a knee injury while training in Chennai in preparation for the upcoming BBL 15 season. The spin legend said he was very disappointed to miss BBL 15. Sydney Thunder was elated to have R Ashwin join them for BBL 15 recently.
After the injury, Ashwin wrote to the Australian cricket fans, “I was really excited to be a part of this group and play in front of you. Right now, I’m working hard on rehab, recovery and coming back stronger. From my first interaction with the club, I have felt nothing but warmth from Trent, the staff, the players and many of you who have already contacted me. Thank you for making me feel at home even before a ball was bowled.”
The 39-year-old Ashwin, who retired from international cricket in December last year and then from the IPL in August, was set to play for Sydney Thunder in what was expected to be his first BBL stint. This tournament is scheduled to start on 14th December this year.
With this latest setback, R Ashwin will also miss the Hong Kong Super Sixes, which start on November 7. Sydney Thunder now have the option of signing a replacement for the injured Ashwin; however, their spin department is full with excellent spinners like Chris Green, Tanveer Sangha, Pakistan’s Shadab Khan and Tom Andrews all part of the squad.
