India Braces for 53-Match Cricket Marathon Before IPL 2027

Team India

The Indian cricket team is set to embark on an exhausting 53-match marathon across all formats before the next IPL season, beginning June 6 at home against Afghanistan with a Test match and three ODIs.

The grueling Future Tours Programme (FTP) will then take India through a relentless series of bilateral engagements:

  • Ireland – Multi-format series
  • England – High-profile clashes
  • Sri Lanka – Regional rivalries
  • UAE – Neutral-venue fixtures
  • Zimbabwe – Short-format tours
  • West Indies – All-format contests
  • New Zealand – Home and away assignments

The highlight of the marathon is a blockbuster five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, scheduled from late January.
With the 2027 ODI World Cup on the horizon, the packed schedule will test the team management’s ability to rotate the squad effectively. Balancing the integration of young talents like Shubman Gill with the experience of veterans like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will be a key challenge.

Notably, there will be no significant break until IPL 2027, raising legitimate concerns about player fatigue and workload management across all formats. The BCCI and selectors will need to strategize carefully to keep the core fit and fresh for the World Cup while navigating this relentless calendar.
