England’s Ashes Hopes Hit By Major Bowling Blow: Star Pacer Ruled Out

Mark Wood

England’s Ashes campaign has suffered a significant setback with the confirmation that express pacer Mark Wood has been ruled out of the remainder of the series due to a recurring left-knee injury. The 35-year-old will return home to begin rehabilitation, casting further doubt on his international future.

Wood sustained the injury during England’s eight-wicket defeat in the first Test in Perth, which marked his first competitive match since undergoing knee surgery in February. The recurrence forced him to miss the ongoing second Test at the Gabba and has now ended his tour entirely, with the final three matches, starting in Adelaide on December 17, now out of reach.

In his place, England have called up Surrey seamer Matthew Fisher. The 28-year-old, who is already in Australia with the England Lions squad, has played one Test to date—against West Indies in 2022. Fisher has taken two wickets in three Lions tour games, though he conceded 0/105 in a recent innings defeat to Australia A in Brisbane.

Wood’s latest injury is another frustrating chapter in a career frequently interrupted by fitness issues. His age and the persistent nature of the problem are likely to raise serious questions about his longevity in the international game as he prepares to work with ECB medical staff on another recovery.
