Daryl Mitchell Ruled Out of West Indies ODIs With Groin Injury

New Zealand has been dealt a significant blow as key all-rounder Daryl Mitchell has been ruled out of the remainder of the ongoing ODI series against West Indies due to a groin injury.

The injury occurred during his match-winning knock in the first ODI at Hagley Oval. Mitchell, who scored his seventh ODI century in that game, experienced discomfort in his thigh while batting and did not take the field for the second innings. Subsequent scans have confirmed a minor groin tear that will require a two-week rehabilitation period.

Henry Nicholls, who was initially named as Mitchell’s replacement for the second ODI in Napier, will now remain with the squad for the duration of the series.

New Zealand head coach Rob Walter expressed his disappointment at losing a player in such rich form. “It’s always tough being ruled out of a series early on with injury, particularly when you’re in hot form like Daryl is. He has been our standout performer in the ODI format so far this summer, so he’ll be missed for two important matches,” Walter said.

However, the coach provided a positive update on Mitchell’s recovery timeline, adding, “The positive is that the injury is only minor, and we should see Daryl recovered and fit for the Test series.” The three-Test series against West Indies is scheduled to begin on December 2 at the Hagley Oval.

Walter also welcomed Nicholls back into the fold, noting his strong domestic form and experience. “Henry has been in top form in the Ford Trophy and is an experienced international cricketer, so it’s great to welcome him back into the side,” he said.
