Bengaluru Stampede Tragedy: RCB Employee Granted Interim Bail

Bengaluru Stampede Tragedy

In a tragic turn of events, a stampede outside Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) IPL victory celebrations on June 4, 2025, resulted in 11 deaths and 56 injuries. The incident was triggered by poor crowd management, with lakhs of fans flocking to the stadium following RCB’s announcement of free entry passes on their website. The FIR noted that chaos erupted at multiple gates (2, 2A, 6, 7, 15, 17, 18, 20, and 21) due to the organizers’ inability to manage the crowd, overwhelming the stadium’s 35,000-seat capacity.

Nikhil Sosale, RCB’s Head of Marketing & Revenue, along with Kiran Kumar (Senior Event Manager) and Sunil Mathew (Vice President – Business Affairs) from DNA Entertainment Network, were arrested on June 6, 2025, by the Central Crime Branch. Sosale was detained at the airport, and his counsel challenged the arrest’s legality in the Karnataka High Court. On June 12, 2025, the court granted Sosale interim bail but required him to surrender his passport.

These developments reflect the highs and lows of cricket. While Nepal and West Indies gear up for a historic series, the Bengaluru tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the need for robust event management to ensure fan safety.
