Ben Stokes Announces Shock Retirement: Final Test at Trent Bridge
Ben Stokes has dropped a bombshell. The England all-rounder will retire from international cricket after the third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge. He informed his teammates on Sunday morning before play began.
It’s the end of a remarkable journey that started in 2011. Ben Stokes has been the heart and soul of English cricket for over a decade. His legacy is packed with unforgettable moments.
Think back to 2019. The ODI World Cup final. Stokes was unbeaten on 84. He took England to their first-ever World Cup win. Later that summer, he played one of the greatest Ashes innings ever. His 135 not out at Headingley kept the series alive.
He also scored a massive 258 against South Africa in Cape Town in 2016. That knock showed his class and fighting spirit.
His final weeks were not smooth. After the first Test win against New Zealand, Stokes and Gus Atkinson broke team rules. They visited a nightclub in London. The ECB investigated and ruled them out of the second Test. Joe Root stepped in as captain.
The Cricket Regulator found no evidence of violent conduct by Stokes. He received a warning for breaching team conduct. But the controversy left a mark.
Before the third Test, Stokes spoke to his team. His words were raw and honest.
“There’s something that I know is going to happen over the next two days which is, this is my last two days as your captain and my last two days representing England. I’ve had many trips to the well before for this team… and I’ve got one more trip to do.” He asked his teammates to give everything for the next two days.
Stokes changed Test cricket. Along with coach Brendon McCullum, he introduced the “Bazball” era. The team played fearless, attacking cricket. Under his captaincy, England won 24 Tests and lost only 17.
ECB Chair Richard Thompson called him “one of England’s greatest ever cricketers.” CEO Richard Gould added, “His influence has extended far beyond statistics.”
This series has already seen Kane Williamson retire from international cricket after the first Test at Lord’s. Now, Stokes joins him. Two giants walk away at the same time. The curtain is falling on an era. And Trent Bridge will be the stage for Stokes’ final bow.
