Bavuma’s Elbow Blow Rocks South Africa Ahead of WTC Final
Temba Bavuma’s knack for bouncing back just hit a wall; South Africa’s Test skipper is out of the domestic first-class final with an elbow injury, and the timing couldn’t be worse. With the World Test Championship final against Australia looming on June 11, the Proteas are sweating bullets after their captain pulled out of the Lions’ clash with the Titans at the eleventh hour. Word broke late Wednesday, leaving the team blindsided; earlier that day, Lions skipper Dominic Hendricks was practically buzzing about having Bavuma’s grit in the lineup for the Johannesburg showdown starting April 10, 2025.
This isn’t Bavuma’s first tussle with that pesky elbow. Back in 2022, he snapped his left one, missing a tour to England, and last year, he tweaked it again, diving in an ODI against Ireland, sitting out Tests against Bangladesh. The guy’s been a warrior, though; strapping it up tight, he roared back this summer with two Test tons against Sri Lanka and four fifty-plus knocks, steering South Africa to the Champions Trophy semi-final. But since that Lahore heartbreak, he’s been off the pitch, stuck watching a rained-out game in Bloemfontein with the Lions last week. He was supposed to swing back into action after a quick Cape Town detour, but now this niggle’s thrown a wrench in the works, just eight weeks out from the big dance at Lord’s.
The Proteas aren’t due to play until mid-May, when they’ll warm up with practice games in England; including a tune-up against an international side; before facing the Aussies. Most of the squad’s scattered, chasing IPL glory or county runs, but Bavuma was staying home, penciled in for this final as his last hurrah of the season. Now, with no word on which elbow’s acting up or how bad it is, the clock’s ticking louder than ever. Fresh off a CSA contract nod this week, he’s got the faith of the suits; but can he shake this curse in time to lead South Africa to WTC glory? Fans are holding their breath.
