Aakash Chopra Questions IPL Orange, Purple Cap Fairness After League Stage

Former India opener and cricket pundit Aakash Chopra has reignited the debate over the fairness of IPL’s Orange Cap and Purple Cap awards, pointing out that players from teams advancing to the playoffs gain an unfair advantage over those from eliminated franchises.

With Royal Challengers Bengaluru finishing atop the league table on net run rate and set to face Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 1 at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala, Chopra highlighted that top teams now have the opportunity to play up to three additional matches in the playoffs.

This extended run gives players like Sai Sudharsan (638 runs) and Kagiso Rabada (24 wickets) a significant edge over eliminated stars such as KL Rahul (593 runs), who have no further games to improve their numbers.

Chopra’s comments sparked discussion among fans, with many pushing back by comparing the IPL system to other global sporting events. Supporters of the current format argue that the World Cup and NBA awards are also decided after playoffs, and that the IPL’s long-standing tradition of awarding caps at the end of the tournament honors sustained performance under pressure.
