Ravichandran Ashwin Profile: Family, Age, Career info, Records & Stats

Ravichandran Ashwin rose from Chennai’s street cricket to become one of the greatest offspinners of his era. His clever mix of the soduku ball, carrom ball, arm ball, and masterful control of the offbreak made him a thinking bowler admired worldwide.
Ashwin filled India’s spin void after Anil Kumble’s retirement and Harbhajan Singh’s decline. He took nine wickets on Test debut, then produced nine five-fors in 16 Tests, becoming the fastest to 300 wickets and second only to Muthiah Muralidaran to 400. With 30 five-wicket hauls, over 90 wickets each against Australia and England, and four years of 50+ wickets, his dominance peaked in the 2016-17 season with 27, 28, and 21 wickets against New Zealand, England, and Australia.
In the IPL, Ashwin starred for Chennai Super Kings, winning two titles and claiming Man of the Series in the 2010 Champions League. He was in the 2011 World Cup-winning squad and shone at the 2015 ODI World Cup with 13 wickets. His best T20I moment came at the 2014 World T20, where he picked up 11 wickets, including 4/11 vs Australia.
Also a capable lower-order batter with multiple Test centuries, Ashwin retired in 2024 as India’s second-highest wicket-taker behind Kumble and the third-most prolific spinner of all time, signing off with 37 wickets in seven home Tests against England and Bangladesh.
