BCCI Awaits Government Nod for Bangladesh Tour Amid Political Uncertainty
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is awaiting government clearance for its upcoming white-ball tour of Bangladesh, scheduled for three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and three Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) starting August 17, 2025. However, the ongoing political situation in Bangladesh has cast doubts on hosting the series as planned, according to Aminul Islam, president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). Speaking to the media after the BCB’s 19th board meeting on June 30, 2025, at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, Aminul expressed optimism about rescheduling the series if August proves unfeasible. “We’re having positive discussions with the BCCI,” he said, adding that the Indian board is awaiting government approval, and the BCB is exploring alternative dates to host the cricketing giants.
In a significant development, the BCB has appointed former ICC elite umpire Simon Taufel to lead umpire education in Bangladesh under a three-year contract. “We’ve nearly finalized the agreement with Simon, and he, along with his team, will work to educate our umpires,” Aminul confirmed. This move aims to enhance the quality of umpiring in the country, aligning with international standards.
The BCB also announced plans to strengthen its selection panels. For the women’s national team, currently managed by lone selector Sazzad Ahmed, the board intends to include a woman selector soon. Additionally, the men’s selection panel, comprising Gazi Ashraf and Abdur Razzak, will expand with the addition of another selector to better manage the workload. “It is difficult for two selectors to cover everything,” Aminul noted.
Looking ahead, the BCB confirmed that the next edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is slated for December 2025 to January 2026. To ensure a professionally managed tournament, the board is in talks with leading sports event management companies. The upcoming BPL cycle will see franchises signing five-year agreements, marking a new phase for the popular T20 league.
These developments reflect the BCB’s commitment to advancing cricket infrastructure and administration while navigating challenges posed by the current political climate.
